Hello all!
As we head into summer, it’s always good to do a check on your hydration. Are you drinking enough water? Research shows the human body functions optimally when consuming about half of its body weight in ounces. For example- if you weigh 100lbs, you would need about 50 ounces of water. This is for a normal person not in extreme temperatures like summer and not for someone who exercises regularly. These numbers increase 20-30 ounces during these times of heat and exertion.
With loss of sweat and fluids during exercise also comes loss of electrolytes. When not properly hydrated, the symptoms can be debilitating. Exhaustion, brain fog, light headedness and dizziness are all symptoms of electrolyte loss. Sometimes being properly hydrated and continuing to hydrate can also flush electrolytes through your urine. This doesn’t happen often but when it does can be remedied quite quickly. An electrolyte replacement like Ultima
Refreshers or an electrolyte infused water can be a great solution. Adding a little salt to your water can also do the trick. I see this most in someone who starts drinking water regularly and hasn’t in the past. They tend to flush their system before their body is able to catch up. These symptoms mainly consist of restless legs and leg cramps at night time. Adding the electrolyte replacement will do the job and cure the symptoms.
Our bodies are desperate for water and proper hydration. With all the options to drink out there, it is often forgotten and replaced with sugary drinks and those with caffeine which actually cause further dehydration. Gatorades, Powerades and those touting hydration can be quite counter productive. Educate yourself on what works for you and makes you feel the best.
Water is life.
For your health-
